sights bog side

Mt. Tom in the distance

grasses caught in the tree during the flooding

The flooded bog road. Yes that is the road.
The waters here were 4 ft deep a week ago.

gray morning in the bog, lots of bird calls and some birders in.
The red winged blackbirds, ducks and geese along with the woodpeckers
were all making a racket.

BARBED WIRE ALONG THE  ROAD OLD PASTURE -

Nasty stuff, barbed wire was used for a reason.  Fencing now not as harmful.
Tacked into trees, the trees eventually grown around it,
but the wounds in the tree often
brought in disease and rot.
Many of the trees die.

once upon a time....

6 years ago an independant, unnamed, wild, male, merle Great Dane
came into the world along with 12 siblings
and 8 weeks later he bought us.

Tim's dog.  My dog that we went to pick up was BLACK and FEMALE.

Day one he just walked away from us..... independant is his middle name

Biting the concrete bench day one.

Still independent and still wild, our boy is a scardy cat, and a clown.
He wags more than any dog.
AND
he plays hard, runs hard and sleeps hard.

AND 4-22-2014

he will be 6 years old.

What is sad is that one of his siblings Zeus, the biggest of the litter
did not make it to this birthday.
My heart goes out to Brad as I know this day is going to be a hard one for him
without his boy.

I could put up another 100 pictures of this boy.
Will try to control myself, but.....
He is way cute and very easy to photograph.

mosses are everywhere

With ice and snow sitting on them the last 4-5 months these mosses are slow to stand up

Mosses are in my woods, under the big oaks, on ledges, walls
and now I have started some in the dome.

I can sit with moss forever.

There are they say more than 10,000 mosses.
These pictures are not close up shots and still they are stunning.
Get close and it gets better.
Little worlds, treelike, textures, colors so primitive so unreal.

I don't have to buy them, weed or care take them.
Oh joy
they just are
and they are stunning.
Nature does it all and does it so well.

To me is feels like stepping into a fairy world.
These shots are of mosses just surfacing from the ice and snow this winter
looking none the worst for wear..

And mosses seem to always be with leaves, rocks, stumps, fallen trees, ferns
woodsy plants,
which just makes them more alluring.

happy as a pig in .....

I often find people, family and friends difficult to fathom.
I guess I have expectations of those around me in behavior and conversations.
Why do they do what they do?

Thus I feel they are all to some degree crazy.

So today I was doing what I totally enjoy which is dusting off rocks.
In my world this is "normal".
I do not know why I find such pleasure from cleaning rocks and stones,
but I do.

The new rock challenge is the wall
that surfaced with the cutting below the house.
Maybe 100-200 ft long it is covered
with pine needles, branches, sticks, leaves and wood chips
 so I am tidying it.
To me this is important.
To most it is just nuts.

Job security as this is a huge job.
When done I can go back to the rocks and other stone walls
that decorate that land that are always in need of brooming and raking.

I would venture a guess that most of my family and friends would find this behavior
not normal, some might go so far to call this work crazy.

We all have our little idiosyncrasies, don't we?

Keeping my rocks tidy makes this girl as
HAPPY AS A PIG IN SHIT.

  1. (UK and Ireland, slang, simile, vulgar) Extremely happy, visibly happy and carefree.

spring fever

It's spring fever.  That is what the name of it is.
And when you've got it, you want -
oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want,
but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!  ~Mark Twain

Brownfield of old

Brownfield now is not a pretty town with lovely old homes and stores.
Not sure it ever was one of those pretty NE towns,
but it had to be better than now.
It lost  much to the 47 fire.
If I were to chose a town to move into it would not be Brownfield.
Yet here I am.
The land chose us. Thus Brownfield it is.

I have no love affair with the town or people here.
What I love is the land, and it is in the midst of EAST Brownfield.

Does that mean I get excited about Brownfield?
On and off I have tried, and over the years I have met people,
tried a bit to fit in, it has not happened.....
Brownfield is limited and sadly not much calls  my spirit, my soul.
I am a homebody and content to just enjoy the land.

every spring

really running off this spring.  Never seen so much draining from the vernal pond

look how thick the ice is on the pond yet

A mixture of ice, snow and water

Add caption

pond is as deep as I have seen in our springs here

winds have been whipping the waters all day which should break up the ice

the winds make the trees shadows all wiggily

same picture evey year, sun on the water.  this year we have clouds.
